Pakistan to kick off their World Test Championship campaign in Oct 2019

Pakistan World Test Championship

Pakistan will kick off their World Test Championship campaign in October next year with a series against Sri Lanka in their home ground, whereas, they are not scheduled to play against the arch-rivals India due to political tension.

The top nine Test playing nations will take on the mutually chosen opponents six times in a two-year long campaign on a home-and-away basis between July 15, 2019, and April 30, 2021.

Test Championship, the initiative which is taken by the International Cricket Council to reinstate fans’ interest in the longest format of the game, will commence from the five-match Ashes series between Australia and England in July next year.

Whereas, the tournament will conclude in June 2021 with the top two teams facing off each other to decide the first Test champion.

ICC Chief Executive, David Richardson has coined Test championship as the best solution to promote the five-day cricket format and believes that it will make every game important.

“The agreement of this FTP means we have clarity, certainty and most importantly context around bilateral cricket over the next five years,” he said in a statement.

“Our members have found a genuine solution that gives fans around the world the chance to engage regularly with international cricket that has meaning and the possibility of a global title at the end,” he added.

Moreover, thirteen teams, including the twelve Test-playing countries and the Netherlands, will compete in an ODI league which will act as a qualifier for the World Cup 2023. The top seven teams at the end of March 2022, along with the hosts India will compete in the multi-nation tournament, whereas the five bottom teams will play qualifying games to enter the World Cup.

The schedule released by the cricket’s governing body on Wednesday includes all series of all three formats of the game.

The schedule includes ICC Cricket World Cup — 2019 and 2023 ICC World T20 — 2020 and 2021 World Test Championship Cycle 1 — 2019-2021 (final 2021) Cycle 2 — 2021-2023 (final 2023) All bilateral Tests, ODIs and T20Is outside of the above competitions.
